Innov-X Systems and Wondjina Research Institute (WRI) have entered into an agreement to bring substantial support and expertise to researchers in the area of Archaeometry. The use of Field-portable XRF is increasingly important to the interpretation of historical and culturally significant findings. It is a nondestructive, in-situ technology capable of measuring elements from Mg through U, at PPM levels up to 100%. It can also quickly identify specific metal alloys and other materials in a matter of seconds.
Under the cooperation, WRI will provide its expertise in the use of Field-portable XRF to researchers by holding workshops and participating in conferences, as well as by collaborating on specific archaeometry projects. Innov-X Systems will provide WRI with the use of Portable XRF Analyzers and sponsorship at conferences through its Academic Relations Grant Program.
"This is exciting news as most of the materials investigated for historical or cultural significance cannot be moved from their location; and, require a technology that can measure the materials without destroying or disturbing them. These investigations are similar to forensic studies; instead of being careful not to destroy the evidence, the need is to be careful not to destroy the treasure," says Kim Russell, Director of Academic Relations at Innov-X Systems. "WRI's expertise in the use of Field-portable XRF for archaeometry combined with our XRF expertise and product offerings will allow further support for this fascinating research. In particular, the unique aspects of the materials, the varied locations, and data interpretation of the studies can now be supported in a time-frame we could not achieve on our own. We are particularly excited about the application of our advanced GPS-XRF System, the Omega Xplorer. It enables researchers to essentially perform instant metal mapping, an incredible dimension to enhance these studies."

Since 2006, we have given very successful Archaeochemical Workshops at national and regional meetings" says Rich Lundin, Director of Wondjina Research Institute. "Our plan includes new research projects and conference participation. My colleague, Dr. Claudia Brackett of California State University-Stanislaus (CSUS), and I are looking forward to initial collaborations over the next several months. These include an investigation at Yosemite National Park in California this month; presentations at the Florida State University Archaeological Sciences of the Americas Symposium in Tampa, FL, in October; and a Hands-on Workshop on the Use of Portable XRF at the Society of Historical Archaeology's Annual Meeting in January, 2010, at Amelia Island, FL."
